Wednesday 07/04/2021
Khalil Al Salem, General Secretary of WAFF, and Mohammed Al Dhaheri, General Secretary of UAE Football Association, discussed the latest developments related to the proposed dates of the 10th WAFF Men Championship scheduled to be hosted by UAE Football Association.

The two general secretaries held a meeting at the headquarters of the UAE Football Association, during which they emphasized the importance of the men’s championships, whose 10th  edition will witness full participation from all the 12 member associations under the umbrella of the WAFF, namely: UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Palestine. Coincidentally, this edition will be the first of which the UAE participates in as well as hosts the championship.

The championship was scheduled to be held in early 2021, but the Covid-19 pandemic imposed a postponement, as is the case for many tournaments and sports competitions around the world.

Al Salem returned to renew his appreciation to the UAE Football Association, which showed great keenness to organize the championship, and expressed his confidence in their ability to organize it in an ideal way equal to its value, especially as it will witness the participation of all the national teams within the region for the first time.

On the other hand, Al Dhaheri stressed that the UAE Football Association is motivated to host the championship and will use all its technical, administrative, and logistical capabilities to organize a distinguished championship.

The WAFF Men’s championship was launched in 2000 with the establishment of the first edition in Jordan, which bore a special character at the time when it came to commemorate the late King Hussain Bin Talal, as its cup bore the name "Hussein”, which remained associated with it throughout the various editions.

The second edition of the WAFF Men’s championship took place in 2002 in Iran, which also returned to host the third edition in 2004, while the fourth was held in Jordan in 2007, and the fifth took place in Iran in 2008, and then Jordan hosted the sixth edition in 2010, then Kuwait for the seventh edition in 2012, and after that was the eighth edition in Qatar in 2014, and finally the ninth edition in Iraq in 2019.
