WAFF Participation in the AFC-FIFA Safeguarding Orientation

The General Secretary of West Asian Football Federation (WAFF), Khalil Al Salem, participated in the AFC-FIFA Safeguarding Orientation 2020 that was held on November 5 with the presence of 2 representatives from each Member Association in the West Zone. 

As a cornerstone of FIFA’s commitment to support its member associations, in July 2019 FIFA launched the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding Program and toolkit to support the roll-out of the FIFA Guardians program and as part of their education and capacity building efforts. FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will be delivering a series of regional safeguarding orientation webinars, via videoconference, on each Thursday of November.

Moreover, Ms. Jasmine Ching, Safeguarding Lead at AFC, welcomed all attendees to the orientation program then spoke about the orientation program before playing two video messages from FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, and AFC President, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al Khalifa. Both messages focused on the importance of safeguarding in the game as well as its importance for both FIFA and AFC.

In addition, FIFA Head of Safeguarding and Child Protection, Kathelyn Leslie, and FIFA Senior Event Safeguarding Manager, Gloria Viseras, talked about Safeguarding in Football and FIFA’s commitment to it as well as FIFA’s Guardian Program. 

Furthermore, The technical Director of the UAE FA, Michel Sablon and UAE Pro League’s Club Licnesing & Development Director, Stuart Larman, shared UAE FA’s experience in this field. Jasmine Ching then spoke about the role of the AFC while Kathryn Leslie talked about the steps the federations need to make in order to assure the quality of safeguarding in football.

The orientation session ended with a Q&A session in which Khalil Al Salem had an intervention about the role of regional federations, such as WAFF, in promoting safeguarding in all competitions. Ching and Al Salem discussed this matter and agreed to make the role of regional federations clearer regarding Member Associations concerning the Safeguarding Program.
